Chaparral Steel, located in Midlothian, Texas, is a technologically advanced steel mill which produces bar and structural steel products from recycled steel. The plant commenced operations in 1975 and more than doubled in capacity in 1982. In 1992, a large beam mill was completed at the Texas site, further expanding Chaparral's capacity and product range. The Company now has two electric arc furnaces with continuous casters, a bar mill, structural mill and a large beam mill which enable it to produce a broader array of steel products than traditional mini mills. A new steel facility is currently under construction in Virginia. Scheduled to begin operations during the summer of 1999, the new mill will expand Chaparral's structural product range. Chaparral follows a market mill concept, making a wide variety of products ranging from large-sized structural beams to specialty bar products and reinforcing bar, all at low cost. This provides the flexibility to shift product mix as market conditions change or as customer modify requirements. The Company distributes its products primarily to markets in North America, principally serving the construction industry and also the railroad, defense, automotive, mobile home and energy industries. Chaparral's customers include steel service centers, steel fabricators, cold finishers, forgers, and original equipment manufacturers.
