Inco was formed in 1902 and incorporated under the laws of Canada in 1916. (Inco is short for International Nickel Company, our original name.) We got our start in Ontario's Sudbury Basin, which has some of the richest mineral deposits in the world. Expanding steadily over the decades, we added operations in Manitoba and, outside Canada, in the United Kingdom, the United States, Indonesia and other locations worldwide. Today, our business is centered around: primary metals, with net sales of U.S. $2,113 million in 1999. Demand for our products keeps growing as living standards around the world improve, not only in developed nations, but also in emerging markets, especially those of Asia. We are a leading world producer of nickel metal, supplying about 24 per cent of world demand. In 1999 alone, we sold more than 258,000 tonnes or 569 million pounds of nickel worth nearly U.S. $1.7 billion. To put that number in perspective, our sales are equivalent to more than 40 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower. That is how much nickel we sell each year. We also produce (that is, mine and process) copper, cobalt and 11 other metals, primarily from our Canadian ores. You are undoubtedly familiar with some of these metals, including gold and silver. But others are less well known, such as ruthenium (for thermostats, voltage regulators and the nibs of fine fountain pens) and selenium (used in photovoltaic cells). We are one of Canada's best-known companies and largest exporters. We are a team of more than 10,000 highly skilled people in 15 countries around the world.
