Sabel Steel, founded in 1869, started as a leather and carriage distribution business. In 1937, the harness and carriage part of the business was discontinued, but the scrap metal recycling operation continued to grow. In 1953 the first steel service center was opened in Montgomery by Sabel Steel. Today Sabel Steel Industries operates five (5) steel service centers in five cities, two (2) scrap metal recycling plants, one (1) reinforcing bar engineering and fabricating plant, and a wholesale center.
